Thanks Tony, fantastic! Love those qantas posters of his - how contemporary they look! It's a wonder why Cyclone hasn't been scanned and vectorised and made a typeface by now?

Hello,

My father, Harry Rogers, designed the font that you have noted as being used from 1968 to 1984 (the production to find a new font, etc, started early, however, it did not appear until Qantas' 50th anniversary in 1970.

The font was actually called 'Cyclone', and a full alphabet was made. Additionally, Qantas commissioned Letraset to produce a full sheet of rub-down letters soon after the final font was chosen, which included symbols ('$', '&', '½', etc) and alphabet letters from other languages (eg: 'ç', 'ø', 'ß', etc); plus there was a full alphabet and Letraset sheets made of a 'light' version of 'Cyclone', however, that never ended up being used.

My father also designed the livery for Qantas aeroplanes that appeared from their first 747, used from 1970 through to 1984; as well as the old 'Captain Cook Lounge' that were in all of the upper floor of the earlier 747s.

Additionally, Harry was the art director for the in-flight magazine from between 1976 to 1984. Plus he was one of the many freelance artists who were employed by Qantas to produce posters. He did about 4 main series of posters, from the 1950s through to the early 1970s

- a geometric series in the 50s-60s: http://faroutbrusselsprout.blogspot.com/2009/12/vintage-qantas-posters-by-harry-rogers.html

- a water-colour series in the 60s (the first poster that appears): http://www.joseflebovicgallery.com/Catalogue/CL_149_2011/Pages/pg09.html

- a collage series in the 60s: http://www.powerhousemuseum.com/collection/database/?irn=370304

- and an oils series in the early 70s: http://www.powerhousemuseum.com/collection/database/?irn=370344

Here's a link to the Qantas shop, showing just a small proportion of some of the posters that Qantas commissioned from Dad: http://www.qantasshop.com.au/subcategory-13-LimitedEditionRetroPosters
...and a poster-collector's gallery in Sydney that includes some other examples of Dad's poster work, some of which can be found in the following Google-search from the store's website: http://www.google.com/search?sitesearch=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.joseflebovicgallery.com&q=harry+rogers&domains=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.joseflebovicgallery.com

By the way, the font that was used from 1984 to 2007 was essentially the same one that appeared in the 1960s; the only difference is that the 'Q' was less curved in the 60s versions. This can be seen in the collage poster link that I've included above.

Further more, there was a condensed font used for the word Qantas used before that one (that BOAC and TEAL also used at the time): http://static.colourlovers.com/uploads/2007/08/aviation_qantas_logo.jpg

I hope you don't mind my obsessiveness in my post ;) but as you're interested in fonts and logos, I thought you may be interested in some more about Qantas.

Cheers for now.

Yours sincerely,

Tony Rogers.

Hi Archie,
There is a series of books called "The Big Book of Logos" but it's mostly USA logos and it doesn't have their history. Some of the bigger Australian designers like Ken Cato and Vince Frost have worked on major Australian corporations' logos and they have books showcasing their works (Ken Cato worked on the Commonwealth Bank logo). I found out about the qantas and ABC logo changes via their wikipedia entry so that's a start too. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Good luck!
